History

The story of Barnes School & Junior College is a breathtaking journey spanning over three centuries. It is an enduring testament to what happens when passionate individuals decide that every child deserves a future, transforming a humble single-room schoolhouse into a legendary sanctuary of learning and character.

Where It All Began

Long before the sprawling campus echoed with the vibrant footsteps of generations, the grand story of Barnes started with a compassionate whisper. In the bustling heart of Mumbai, then Bombay, a dedicated chaplain named Revd. Richard Cobbe recognised a desperate need to educate local children.

He established a modest Charity School near St. Thomas' Cathedral, starting with just twelve boys and a single master.

The Arrival of a Visionary: Archdeacon George Barnes

The Venerable George Barnes, the first Archdeacon of Bombay, stepped onto Indian shores to begin a twelve-year ministry that would forever alter the educational landscape of the region.

Devoted to the upliftment of the vulnerable, he became a tireless champion for education and the Church, laying the groundwork for a monumental movement.

The Birth of the Bombay Education Society

On January 29, 1815, Archdeacon Barnes appealed to the congregation of St. Thomas' Church to educate underprivileged children, sparking the creation of the Bombay Education Society (B.E.S.) under Governor Sir Evan Nepean.

The Society pioneered community-funded schooling, grants-in-aid, mother-tongue education through its own printing press, and practical vocational apprenticeships.

A Grand New Horizon in Byculla

As the school continued to grow, a larger space became essential. The Government granted the Bombay Education Society a substantial parcel of land in Byculla, Mumbai, to establish proper and spacious school buildings.

The site is associated with Christ Church, a sister institution.

Laying the Stones of History

On May 5, 1825, the Governor of Bombay laid the foundation stones for two grand new buildings, one for boys and one for girls. Special copper plates were placed within the stonework to commemorate the historic occasion.

Remarkably, one of the original copper plates remains embedded in the wall of Evans Hall. Shortly afterwards, Archdeacon Barnes returned to England, leaving behind a school community that would remember his devotion.

The Shield of Distinction: The Barnes Crest

In 1920, Sir George Barnes, a member of the Council of the Governor of Bombay and a relative of Archdeacon Barnes, granted the school a distinctive honour.

The Bombay Education Society received official permission to adopt the Barnes family crest, an emblem reflecting the heritage of both the Barnes and Carnac families.

The Deolali Odyssey: Barnes School Is Born

January 29, 1925, marked a defining moment in our legacy. Officially inaugurated by Sir Leslie Wilson, Governor of Bombay, Barnes High School, Deolali, opened its gates.

Nestled among the tranquil hills, the school established a permanent home for generations of students to learn, grow and pursue academic excellence.

Surviving World War II: The Ultimate Test of Grit

During World War II, Deolali underwent significant disruption as the military took over part of the playground. Barnes responded to the challenges of the period with resilience and a spirit of service.

The school supported students entering the armed forces and nursing corps, sheltered refugees fleeing Burma, conducted air-raid drills and helped feed soldiers amid severe food shortages.

Through these difficult years, the spirit of the Barnes community endured.

Our Sacred Motto: Accepto Robore Surgam

In 1950, the school received its complete official crest from London, featuring a proud white falcon and the Latin motto:

Accepto Robore Surgam

“I shall arise with the strength I have received.”

The motto expresses a lasting ideal: the lessons, friendships and values gained at Barnes help students find the strength to rise above life's challenges.

A Gift from the Skies

A piece of aviation history found a permanent home at Barnes School when a MiG-21 aircraft was gifted to the institution by Air Chief Marshal Anil Yashwant Tipnis, former Chief of Air Staff.

The aircraft became a distinctive part of the school's campus and its story.
